Brave Browser markets itself as privacy inspired company that uses Brave Shield to protect you from prying eyes on the internet. Also, there are many, who claim it to be the best browser for privacy.
They have been steadily making inroads into the market, and according to Head of Marketing, Des Martin via his twitter account, there were 1 million Brave Browser downloads in March alone.
What is Brave Browser?
Brave Browser is the free open-source Internet browser from Brave Software Inc. Which by the way, gives out BAT cryptocurrency as a reward for allowing advertisements.
On the brave website, it states that the browser will give unmatched speed, security, and privacy by blocking trackers. To do this they use Brave Shield.
When you open your browser, you will see the Brave Shield icon. This icon shows you how Brave Shield is protecting you.
How does Brave Shield protect your privacy?
Many sites add trackers and cookies to their web pages. These can track and follow you as you surf the net.
Do you ever visit a website and then for weeks you keep getting ads related to your search? Well those trackers are the reason.
Brave Shield blocks this type of content, making you harder to track from site to site and even increases your browsing speed.
But does this make Brave the best browser for privacy?
What does Brave Shield do to protect your privacy?
When you click on the icon a panel will appear. This has 4 sections: Shields state/toggle; Domain/Block Count; Protections; View/Link to Defaults.
Understanding how to read them will help keep you abreast of any threats and protect you whilst browsing.
Use this toggle to turn on and off the Brave Shield. When the icon is orange, it is ‘on’, and is blocking content from the site you are visiting. When the icon is grey it is ‘off’ and the page you are viewing will show and permit all content the site wishes.
This section contains the Domain name for the website you are on, and the amount of page elements that are currently being blocked by Brave Shield. The number of elements blocked will change each time, as the block count will reset each time you visit the page.
Brave Shield protects your privacy from an array of online content, including malware, phish attacks and tracking software. These are shown in the third section.
Cross Site Trackers
This switch gives you the power to block ads from the site you are visiting and blocks the trackers that are attached to the ads. Furthermore, you can click on the arrow at the side and this will show you what exactly is being blocked.
By default, Shield will not block First party ads, as these are part of the site you are visiting. Ads that are part of the site you are visiting are not spying on your online movements. Brave shield already blocks ads that track you.
Connections Upgraded to HTTPS
This upgrades your connection from HTTP to HTTPS Everywhere. It encrypts your communications with many major websites, making your connection more secure.
Brave Shield has this feature already included in both its desktop and android browsers, whereas it must be downloaded as an extension for desktop versions of Google, Firefox and Opera.
This an advanced setting. It blocks scripts such as Java script run on sites. It is best to leave this on default as blocking certain scripts can cause sites to break.
By default, this is set to allow first-party cookies, as these are usually needed to sign in to a website but are set to block third party cookies.
There are 3 separate settings for cookie control.
Cross-site cookies blocked- first-party cookies only.
Cookies blocked- all first- and third-party cookies blocked.
All cookies allowed- allows both first- and third-party cookies.
Some sites use your browsers unique traits to identify you, this is called fingerprinting or device recognition.
However, fingerprinting is not always used to track you. Some sites such as online gaming sites use device recognition for legitimate purposes. For this reason, the default is set to allow first-party fingerprinting.
Device recognition has 3 settings which are the same as for Cookie control.
Brave Browser has lived up to its promise of unmatched browser speed, privacy, and security. This is all possible because of Brave Shield which stops trackers, cookies, malware, fingerprinting, and in many cases encrypts your communications using HTTPS.
We also like how Brave Shield’s interface and easy to understand layout helps demystify how we are spied on, as we surf the web, and we believe it is the best browser for privacy.
Download Brave Browser now and see for yourself, safe in the knowledge that your information is not being sold to huge corporations, who in turn target you constantly.
