Sorare fantasy football platform, just last month, sold the Unique Neymar digital football card for over $29,000 (74.416 ETH).
Therefore, Neymar has now become the most expensive player on Sorare.
However, do not be fooled into thinking that this is a one off. Managers and more importantly, investors are pumping a lot of money into Sorare.
So far, there have been 48 playing cards sold for over 10 ETH ($4,000) each.
This is further borne out by the fact that Sorare consistently ranks among the highest daily volumes of all the Ethereum based gaming dApps.
What is Sorare?
Sorare is an Ethereum based football/soccer game in which you buy officially sanctioned digital football cards. You can then set up a team and compete in twice weekly global and regional leagues.
Among the Football Associations that Sorare have signed up are the Belgian, Korean, Japanese, and North American leagues. Moreover, the list of teams and official leagues that have signed contracts with Sorare grows weekly.
Furthermore, many individual teams from the top global leagues have signed on. These include, global brands such as ,Juventus, Bayern Munich, Athletico Madrid, Paris St German, Juventus and West Ham United.
On top of that, there are teams from the South and Central American leagues. In all, Sorare have now signed up over a 100 globally recognized teams.
You can read a more detailed article on the workings of the Sorare platform in our Sorare review.
How does it work?
Sorare have signed contracts with all their partner teams. This allows them to produce fully licensed collectible digital football cards for any player that plays for a participating team.
In addition, these digital cards are produced and verified on the Ethereum blockchain. Consequently, this enables Sorare to create a limited number of cards which in turn creates a scarcity.
As a consequence, as more managers join the game and create teams there will be more demand for players cards. This added liquidity should then ensure higher prices for digital cards.
How many cards are produced of each player?
Now, to create a scarcity, you need to produce a limited amount. Therefore, Sorare produces 3 levels of scarcity: unique, superrare and rare. In total, they make 111 cards for each player.
First, we have the Rare cards, of which there are 100 digital cards produced of each player.
Second, Sorare produce 10 superrare cards of each player.
Finally, we have the Unique card, of which there is only 1 made for each player.
Who are the most expensive players on Sorare?
Currently, Neymar, the Paris St German forward takes the top spot as the most expensive player on Sorare. He cost more than double paid for his nearest rival, Kylian Mbappe (forward, Paris St German). Mbappe cost 31.186 Ξ.
Here is list of the top 10 most expensive players on Sorare;
|Killian Mbappe||PSG||Forward||31.186 Ξ|
|Cristian Pavon||Los Angeles||Forward||18.690 Ξ|
|Arnaud Bodart||Liege||Goalkeeper||18.701 Ξ|
|Damir Kreilach||Salt Lake||Midfield||18.690 Ξ|
|Nikola Vlasic||CSKA||Midfield||16.380 Ξ|
|Keylor Navas||PSG||Goalkeeper||15.971 Ξ|
As you can see from the above table, people are willing to invest a lot of money in Sorare digital football cards.
In addition, 200 digital cards have been sold for over 5Ξ, and hundreds more have been auctioned for over 1Ξ.
These are big numbers for such a new dApp, What is more surprising is the relatively few managers holding the digital cards.
Why are people willing to pay so much for Sorare digital football cards?
First and foremost, Sorare fantasy football/soccer game is fun. Before you dive in to the market you are given 10 free common cards when you sign up. These cards are free and you can join a rookie league to hone your skills.
Then, once you learn the rules and get the hang of the game, you start building a team to compete in the pro leagues.
Soon after, your checking your players statistics, swapping your players around, choosing captains. Next, before you know it, you are fretting over how you are going to get a goalkeeper within your budget (goddamn those hoggers of goalkeepers).
Second, investors realize that this is early doors for Sorare. The company started in 2019. So, just by looking at the graph above you can see its phenomenal growth and potential.
At the start of January 2020, there were around 200 digital card owners. Therefore, since there are now more than 3000 licensed players, participation has went up fifteen fold.
They say football is the most widely supported sport in the World. They are right. Early investors know this and with all these famous A list teams coming on board they smell big gains in the coming years.
Another reason, we as humans love to collect things. Moreover, we have been doing it for 2.5 million years (stone tools).
To know through the use of blockchain technology that you have an authentic unique card is well, I don’t know, just nice. Even, to have 1 of 10 or 1 of 100 still feels like an achievement.
Are there any bargains to be had?
To begin with, that is a barbed question, as each has their own idea of a bargain.
As in any game or sport, people will pay big money for the most popular stars. Therefore, when bidding for A list stars, it is going to be difficult to find a bargain.
Saying that, it is still possible to get players for under 10 euros. I can attest to that myself, as the majority of my cards cost under that. You can do this by studying different factors. For instance, the times of the day when there fewer managers bidding at auction.
Likewise, it could just be, that anything bought now may well be a bargain. As mentioned before, Sorare digital football cards are just over a year old. If the game takes off, and there is no reason to suppose it won’t, then prices could skyrocket.
As more and more world class teams come on board and more managers and investors sign up to Sorare, then the current record price for the most expensive player on Sorare is sure to be broken.
There are a number of factors that lead us to this conclusion.
First, the game is relatively new, but has had excellent growth. Think what could happen to prices if it eventually goes mainstream.
Second, as more players join up to manage, liquidity in the market will pump up prices.
Third, each new football club that comes onboard have there own huge publicity machines. These will help increase the public exposure of Sorare fantasy football/soccer league.
These and other factors seem to point to bright future of higher prices over the coming months and years, as Sorare’s popularity increases.
In short, Neymar may be the most expensive player on Sorare, but he won’t be forever.
